Your first yoga class
You do not need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start yoga. Beginner classes at Svastha Studio are capped at 6 to 7 people. Each position is explained and options are offered when you need them.
The four things people worry about, answered
"I am not flexible." Neither is most of the room. Flexibility comes with practice, it is not something you need first. If you cannot touch your toes, we will not ask you to.
"I will not know what to do." The instructor talks you through every movement as it happens. You are not expected to already know the names or the order.
"Everyone will be watching me." There are five or six other people, all of them looking at their own mat, most of them just as unsure. The only person watching you is the instructor, and that is their job.
"I am not fit enough." There is no fitness entry requirement. Come as you are and the class adjusts to you.
What the hour actually looks like
You arrive ten minutes early. Someone shows you where to put your things and where to set up. You tell the instructor if anything hurts.
The class starts lying down or seated. Breathing first, then slow movement, then the main sequence, then a few minutes on your back at the end doing nothing at all. That last part is not optional and it is not a warm down. For a lot of people it is the best bit.
You can stop and rest at any point. Then you leave, probably feeling a little taller.
Which class to book first
Asana Basics is built for a first class. Hatha yoga is steady and gives you time to understand each position. Gentle yoga offers more support. Flex and Flow is also beginner friendly if you prefer continuous movement.
What to bring
Wear clothes you can move in and bring water. Mats are provided, or bring your own if you prefer.
Common questions
Can I start if I have never exercised?
Yes. Tell the instructor it is your first class and take the options that suit you.
What if I cannot keep up?
Stop and rest. The instructor can offer a different version of the movement.
Do I need to book?
Yes. Classes are small, so book before you come.
What if I have a back or knee problem?
Tell the instructor before class. If you have a diagnosed condition or significant pain, check with your doctor or physiotherapist first. A private session may be a better place to begin.
